When and How should you clean your earrings?

After you pierced your ears, you would surely have gotten many pairs of earrings to wear on a daily basis. But how often should you actually clean your earrings after wearing it so much? And how do you clean your earrings to maintain their pristine and beautiful appearance after so long? This month, we will show you the right steps to maintaining and cleaning your favourite earrings to last a long long time!

Firstly, you should actually clean your earrings as often as possible! A good guideline will be to clean it once a week, especially if you wear that pair of earrings everyday. This is because every time you put on your earrings, you are potentially introducing bacteria, dirt and anything that can potentially cause an ear piercing infection if not careful. So it is really important for you to make sure that the earring you are placing in your piercing is clean.

To clean your earrings, there are a few methods, namely:

1. Using hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide is a great option for jewelry cleaning. It acts as a disinfectant and washes away grime. If your earrings need a quick sprucing up, put some peroxide on a cotton pad, then carefully use the pad to clean all over the earring. Or fill a small cup with hydrogen peroxide. Let your earrings sit in there for a few minutes and then drop them into a cup of warm water. After a minute or so you can remove them from the warm water and use a Q-tip to clean the areas with grime left over

2. Give them a wipe with a microfiber cloth.
A soft, microfiber cloth like the one you use to wipe your sunglasses works well on jewelry. Microfiber cloths will gently buff out any fingerprints or product residue without damaging the earring itself.

You can also use Blomdahl’s aftercare cleaning wipes to wipe your earrings clean as well!

3. Dazzle precious stones with dish soap.

Certain gems, like the Cubic Zirconia, are super strong, but you still need to be careful when cleaning them. Mix together 3-5 drops of dish soap and one cup of tap water. Let the water cool enough to touch. Take the items and use a soft toothbrush to scrub away any residue that’s left. Let air dry on a paper towel or clean cotton cloth.

Soak your gems in the solution for about three to four minutes, then rub gently with a soft, clean toothbrush. Let them soak for another one to two minutes, then rinse them off in a bowl of cold water and let dry.

4. Get an ultrasonic jewellery cleaning machine
Fill the tank with a cleaning solution. After the cleaner is turned on, its motor produces ultrasonic vibrations through the liquid. These vibrations will break down the dirt particles accumulated on the surface of your jewelry. The good thing about ultrasonic cleaners is that they can clean the parts of your jewelry that are otherwise unreachable when using more conventional methods.

With all these methods, start cleaning your earrings regularly from today! Keep your earrings clean and protect your ears from any potential infections!
